Space: the James Webb telescope offers new explanations for the formation of planets

Since 2021, the James-Webb space telescope has been dissecting the past of the Universe in many new aspects. NASA’s spacecraft should enable science to provide new knowledge aimed at explaining various events, such as solar flares. But James Webb pursues other designs. And in particular that of tracing the emergence of the planets. How was the Solar System in which the Earth is located structured? Scientists have recently tried to provide new elements of answer to this abysmal question.

In a study published on November 8 in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters, a team of researchers set out to popularize the function played by protoplanetary disks in the formation of planets.

These gas and dust giants prove essential. Indeed, they host icy rocks, which, as they move towards the Sun, release water vapors under the effect of extreme temperatures. A phenomenon which has also been explained in a Press release from NASA.

The importance of cold water

To reach these conclusions, scientists observed four protoplanetary disks: two considered to be “compacts” and two others “extended”.

These surround two stars two to three million years old. On the scale of the Universe, this characterizes embryonic celestial bodies. The researchers expressed their surprise when reading the results.

The compact structures disperse more water than its expansive cousins. A phenomenon which finds its genesis in the composition of these discs, mainly made of cold water.

As they approach birth stars, the icy pieces, more present in compact structures, evaporate. A new illustration of the importance of cold water in the constitution of rocky planets.

The latter are one of the consequences of the birth of the Solar System around 4.6 billion years ago. As a result of a separation of matter from gas, the Sun and protoplanetary disks were created.

Placed in orbit, the structures transformed into planets. The James-Webb telescope might soon reveal new images allowing us to understand the creation of the Solar System.
