The long-awaited Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, according to one of the developers from Saber Interactive, will be entirely devoted to the galactic scale of the Tyranid invasion. A new game dedicated to the legendary Ultramarines and their fight once morest the rising xenos threat, as well as focusing on the protagonist of the original Space Marine, promises a new kind of WH40K experience.
In general, many 40K games fail to successfully capture the scale and power of most of their factions, but Space Marine 2 seeks to exploit a unique advantage that other development studios have not had access to. In a recent interview, Saber Interactive creative director Oliver Hollis-Lick went into detail regarding what this new project might stand out for.
As recent gameplay trailers have shown, hundreds upon hundreds of active fighters are simultaneously involved in the game’s combat scenes. According to a new interview, the game should be “bigger than its genre brethren and bigger than its predecessor.” The reason why this is possible lies, in particular, in one of the previous projects Saber Interactive: World War Z.
We have our own engine at Saber that has allowed us to do things in World War Z that we mightn’t do with any other engine. This software allows the game to simultaneously show hundreds of interactive enemies without any visible loss of visual fidelity, which is a major aspect of why Space Marine 2 looks so epic and grand.
It’s worth noting that the value of Saber Interactive’s own game engine has already been proven. Newly released in World War Z, Horde Mode XL highlights the mind-bogglingly large hordes of zombies that often swoop down on others to get to their target. While World War Z is technically just another zombie shooter, the fact that it throws hundreds of zombies at players at once has helped it rise above the rest of the competition, and something similar might happen with Space Marine 2.
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is currently in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
