“These first images give an interesting insight into the data that we will be able to obtain thanks to Euclid,” said Carole Mundell, scientific director of the mission.
Euclid was launched on July 1 and is 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The satellite is equipped with a telescope fitted with two cameras: one for the visible wavelength range and the other for the infrared range. Thanks to these cameras, ESA aims to determine the shape and size of galaxies, which should make it possible to study the evolution of the universe over the last ten billion years.
“Although these first images are not yet usable for scientific purposes, I am happy to see that the telescope and the two instruments are working perfectly in space,” said Knud Jahnke, of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy. from Heidelberg. For now, Euclid only provides test images. In the fall, the telescope should really start working.
