Brazil in fact – Data published by the Internal Affairs of the Military and Civil Police of São Paulo, this Tuesday (4), show that police lethality increased by 29% in February of this year, compared to the same month of 2022.
There was a significant increase, of 42.9%, in the number of deaths resulting from the action of police officers on duty. Police lethality rates were falling in 2022, during the government of Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), mainly following the installation of body cameras in the uniforms of agents.
In January of this year, there was also a record of an increase in police lethality. The number of people murdered by civilians and military was 20% higher, compared to the same month in 2022.
The increase in lethality in the first two months of the year, which marks the beginning of the government of Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and the management of Guilherme Derrite at the head of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), worries specialists, who already see a new policy adopted by the corporation.
“The lethality was reducing and there is a command influence, mainly the Military. The other thing is that the police get used to the cameras and create ways of understanding what is happening and ways of dealing with it,” says Rafael Alcadipani, a professor at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and member of the Brazilian Public Security Forum ( FBSP).
In all, 30 people were murdered by police officers on duty in February, with six deaths by civil police and 24 by military police. According to Alcadipani, “death by police officers on duty raises concerns and lights up a yellow light.”
