A new surgeon robot was used for the first time in the country during surgery to remove a prostate last Wednesday (4). The so-called Hugo was controlled by urologist Arie Carneiro with the aid of 3D glasses and a series of large screens where his team might follow the procedure, showing the images transmitted live by the cameras attached to the arms of the novelty.
Hugo, in a way, replaces Carneiro’s hands, who controls the robot through controls a few meters away from his sedated patient at Albert Einstein Hospital, in São Paulo.
As described in a report by UOL’s VivaBem portal, in addition to manual control, Hugo offers six pedals, each responsible for different functions, such as dissection. Naturally, Carneiro had to undergo private training, despite already being a specialist in robotic surgery.
Technological advances promise to expand the presence of this type of method in the medical world. It is estimated that, around the world, more than 11,000 surgeries have already been performed with the help of robots. Among the advantages is the reduction of the invasiveness of certain procedures, even though similar models are sold in the range of US$ 2.5 million (regarding R$ 12.5 million).
After debuting in Chile in 2021, Hugo, manufactured by Medtronic, is already used in countries such as England, Germany, Canada, Japan, India and Panama. Recently, it was approved by Anvisa. In the case of the test surgery, the prostate was successfully removed and the patient was discharged the next day.
