Soybean and biodiesel are at the top of the products traded within the scope of Brazilian agribusiness, according to the report “GDP, Employment and Foreign Trade in the Soybean and Biodiesel Chain”, a survey carried out by Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics ), from Esalq/USP (Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo), in partnership with Abiove, the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries.
Last year, the soybean and biodiesel production chain played a significant role of 27% of the national Agro GDP, which is equivalent to an impressive R$ 673.7 billion. According to research data, in 2010, when the historical series began, this share corresponded to 9%, indicating a notable growth of 58% over that period.
In addition, it is important to highlight that the participation of this chain in Brazil’s total GDP also increased, from 2% in 2010 to 7% in 2022.
The survey also points out that the soy and biodiesel chain was responsible for 10,8% of jobs generated in Brazilian agribusiness. And the indicators referring to the supply of jobs were also record-breaking: in 2022, 2.05 million vacancies, which, compared to the number registered a decade ago (1.14 million), reveals a significant growth of 80% in the number of people employed in the sector.
André Lavor, CEO of Binatural, a company specialized in biofuels that has been operating in the market since 2006, believes that the soy and biodiesel chain has had a positive impact on the country’s economy.
“This sector has provided employment and growth opportunities for everyone, effectively contributing to Brazil’s socioeconomic development and providing livelihoods for millions of workers and their families,” says the expert.
