Southgate explains the Guéhi decision

Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guéhi, 23, was suspended in the European Championship quarter-final once morest Switzerland. He was replaced by Ezri Konsa, who did well.

Union captain Gareth Southgate therefore had a choice to make ahead of England’s semi-final once morest the Netherlands on Wednesday night: start with Guéhi – or Konsa?

The choice fell on the former.

– He has been so good. It wasn’t an easy decision but we felt Marc didn’t deserve to be left out of the starting eleven following his start to the tournament,” Southgate told UEFA’s website.

– Ezri did a brilliant job for us (in the quarter-finals) but Marc has been exceptional.

As left wing-back, Kieran Trippier was once once more trusted from the start. But now he has competition from a Manchester United star, who is back from injury:

– Luke Shaw is very close to starting. It’s a bonus for us,” said Southgate.

Guéhi had played all the minutes in the championship until the Switzerland match. Wednesday night’s semi-final once morest the Netherlands will be his 16th cap for England.
