SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s parliament passed landmark legislation Tuesday banning the consumption of dog meat, a centuries-old practice.
The National Assembly approved the initiative by 208 votes in favor and none once morest. It will become law following being endorsed by the Council of Ministers and signed by the president, Yoon Suk Yeol, two procedures considered a formality since Yoon’s government supports the veto.
The bill will make it illegal to slaughter, breed, trade and sell dog meat for human consumption starting in 2027, in addition to punishing these acts with sentences of between two and three years in prison.
Efforts to ban dog meat consumption have met with stiff resistance from farmers and others in the nation’s dwindling dog meat industry. Recent surveys showed that the majority of South Koreans no longer consume this product.
