South Korea Takes Historic Step to End Dog Meat Industry: Bill Presented to Prohibit Breeding and Slaughter for Human Consumption

Various animal groups celebrate today the bill presented by the South Korean parliamentarian Han Jeoung-ae to prohibit the breeding and slaughter of dogs for human consumption in it asian country.

The bill presented by Han, former Minister of the Environment between 2021 and 2022 with the previous South Korean governmenthas the support of 10 other parliamentarians, including seats from the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP).

The PPP already proposed a similar bill last April.

One of the groups in defense of animal rights that has been most pleased with this action is the South Korean branch of Humane Society International (HSI), which has collaborated with Han in preparing the proposal, trying to include the resulting experience of his ‘Models for Change’ programme.

Since 2015, the program has managed to permanently close 18 farms dog breeding for human consumption (which has meant the rescue and adoption of some 2,700 dogs) with assistance packages so that the owners of these farms can transition to other businesses such as the cultivation of chili peppers.

“This is a historic day for animal welfare in South Korea that will hopefully mark the beginning of the end for the dog meat industry in our country. It is clear that there is significant social and political momentum to end the era. of dog meat in South Korea once and for all,” HSI’s director of government affairs said in an email today. Breeding of dogs for human consumption

HSI estimates that around one million dogs still are raised intensively on thousands of farms across the country, “generally in extremely precarious welfare conditions”.

If the law is passed, dog breeders for human consumption they would have five years to close their farms and, with the help of public subsidies and training, move on to other businesses.
