The Postal Service of South Korea today raised the alarm for the shipment to various parts of the country of mysterious packages that might contain toxic substances following three people had to be hospitalized.
The first reported incident occurred on Thursday in the port city of Ulsan (southeast coast), where one of these packages was received at a disability assistance center.
Three people who were present when the package was opened suffered dizziness and shortness of breath and had to be sent to a hospital, where they remain hospitalized today, but now stable.
Medical tests have not yet indicated what caused the symptoms, and that package has been sent to the Defense Development Agency for further analysis.
“Do not open mail from unknown sources”
Today, around 6:00 p.m. local time (9:00 GMT), a similar package was found in a post office in the same city, and the reports began to multiply, as packages of this type were also detected in at least five districts of seoulYongin (suburb of the South Korean capital), Daejeon (center of the country), Haman (southeast) or Jeju Island (southwest).
The packages, which appear to contain a pasty, odorless product, are yellow or black in color and in several cases the sender has indicated that the shipment came from an alleged company called Chunghwa Post with a PO Box in Taipei, in taiwan.
In all of them, the sender’s contact details are useless, South Korean police have said.
South Korean municipalities have begun sending messages to mobile phones using the national alert system warning citizens that “unidentified international mail items are being reported at various points” and not to open “mail from unknown sources and immediately call” numbers for police or emergency services.
