South Korean authorities want to leave the monkeypox crisis warning at the current level of “Caution”.
The decision was made at a meeting to assess the crisis situation on Monday, the Disease Control and Prevention Authority (KDCA) announced. “Caution” is the second lowest level in the four-level crisis alert system.
The decision comes following the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the global monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on Saturday.
The KDCA announced that the rate of infection with monkeypox in South Korea was unchanged. However, there is the possibility of importation from abroad. She therefore wants to closely monitor developments abroad and, if necessary, check the procurement of further vaccines and medicines.
According to the KDCA, despite the declaration of international emergency, the WHO maintained its risk assessment at the first emergency meeting on monkeypox in June. The risk in Europe is high and the risk is moderate worldwide except for the European region, according to the WHO.
