What happened went viral in the country and served as an example for others.
Thousands of beer bottles were falling from a five-ton truck in South Korea.
The accident occurred when a truck driver made a sharp turn in the city of Chuncheon, flooding the street with a torrent of beer and broken glass. and wrapping the road in white foam in seconds.
The spill, which took place some 46 miles north of Seoul, might have easily precipitated a string of additional accidents and an hour-long traffic jam, but 18 Samaritans saved the day.
Immediately following the 2,000 bottles were smashed on the road, the driver stopped, then walked over to the pile and began gathering up the wreckage.
Moments later, a passerby approached the driver and began stacking the boxes to the side. A local convenience store owner brought brooms and dustpans and joined the effort.
The rain, coupled with the lack of umbrellas and raincoats, did not prevent 16 more passers-by from gathering and clearing the road in less than half an hour. When the job was done, they went back to their own business, as if it were a matter of course.
Six days following the incident, Oriental Brewery Company released surveillance camera footage of the beer spill cleanup.
The company published notices and advertisements with images of the incident to locate the good Samaritans and thank them. They used the slogan: “We are looking for the real heroes of Chuncheon City.”
“We wanted to meet the citizens and express our gratitude to each of them in person,” Joo-hwan Baek, associate director of public relations for Oriental Brewery Company, told ABC News.
“We also hoped to spread the good they did. It was also very inspiring for us,” they added.
Images of the cleanup have been trending on social media and in South Korean news ever since.
“Nobody asked citizens to jump in the rain and collaborate; it was a collective, voluntary effort with a selfless motive,” Se-yeon Hwang, 20, told ABC News.
“The video was a powerful reminder of the good that a caring community with an altruistic heart can do,” they said.
A similar accident occurred less than a week following the Oriental Brewery Company released the video. Another truck spilled hundreds of bottles of Korean vodka in the middle of a busy street in the metropolitan city of Incheon.
Given the long queue of cars and buses following the truck, collateral damage seemed inevitable, but dozens of citizens who witnessed the crash banded together and helped clear the road in regarding half an hour.
“It’s heartwarming to see goodwill like this, especially in an era of war, violence and widespread hatred,” Mei Lee, 52, told ABC News. “I hope to see more acts of kindness in this world.”
