More than 30 people have died in South Korea following heavy rains and floods. After the discovery of five buried people, the death toll increased to 31, according to the authorities on Sunday. According to local media reports, other people were also missing. So the number of victims might still increase. Thousands of people had to be evacuated. Premier Han Duck-soo called on the military to help with the rescue work.
The torrential downpour triggered ten landslides and temporary power outages in 13 parts of the country on Saturday night. In the central district of Goesan alone, almost 7,000 residents had to be evacuated following a local dam overflowed. According to media reports, seven injuries were also reported.
The situation remained tense. The weather office announced persistent, heavy rain for large parts of the country. South Korea is currently in the summer rainy season, during which there are regular floods.
