South Korea allows import of sex dolls

Although they were not expressly prohibited, they were confiscated at customs.

South Korea has formally ended a ban on importing full-body sex dolls, ending years of debate over how much the government can interfere in private life.

Although there are no laws or regulations prohibiting the importation of sex dolls, hundreds and perhaps thousands have been seized by customs, citing a law that prohibits the importation of goods that “harm the beautiful traditions and public morals of the country.”

The importers complained and took their case to the courts, most of which agreed with them and ordered customs to release the sex dolls, saying they are used in people’s private spaces and do not undermine human dignity. .

On Monday, the Korea Customs Service said in a statement that a revised guideline for bringing life-size adult sex dolls into the country has started to apply. It said it reviewed recent court rulings and opinions from relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

The customs service said it will continue to ban the importation of sex dolls shaped like children or dolls representing certain people. He noted that other countries such as the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom also ban sex dolls shaped like children.

Some conservative and women’s rights organizations are likely to again voice their opposition to the use of sex dolls. They say that these sharpen the sexual objectification of women and undermine public morality.
