South Kivu: a vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis planned for the end of April

The provincial Ministry of Health of South Kivu will organize from April 28 to 30 a vaccination campaign once morest poliomyelitis.

This campaign aims to prevent this epidemic which has already caused 22 cases in neighboring Maniema.

The Provincial Health Division (DPS) made the announcement Thursday, April 14, during a media briefing in Bukavu.

« For the moment, there is a resurgence of a few notified cases of a type of poliovirus in the province of Maniema with 22 cases reported. We wanted to share with the media professionals of the city of Bukavu on the issue of vaccination once morest poliomyelitis that the ministry intends to organize from the 28th until the 30th of this month of April “, indicated the communication officer of the DPS Sud-Kivu, Dr. Claude Bahizire.

He explained that the objective of this briefing is to inform the majority of parents regarding this campaign so that they prepare their children.

« We are going to organize this response campaign for the benefit of children from 0 to 5 years old. The vaccinators will go from one household to another to vaccinate all these children. So it was necessary as professionals who help us, who support us in the transmission of messages to parents, that they also be strengthened in capacity so that they can, at times also, respond to certain concerns of the population in order to to enlighten our parents so that they can prepare these children from 0 to 5 years old “, he added.

This campaign is part of supplementary immunization activities.

Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus (poliovirus) that invades the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis.
