Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva proposed a special currency for mutual exchange for South American countries. This is to reduce the current overvaluation of the US dollar. The proposal was made at the summit of the Association of South American Nations, which ended on Tuesday in Brasilia. Formed in 2008, there are 12 countries in the region.
The joint statement issued by the summit will also strengthen unity in the region. A special committee comprising the foreign ministers of the member states will be constituted for concerted action. It was decided to ensure democracy and social justice in the region and protect peace and human rights. It was also decided to work together on issues including climate change and food crisis.
Leaders including Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro attended the summit.
