South American countries will ask FIFA to maintain the format of the Qualifiers

  • The unanimous decision was adopted during the CONMEBOL Council meeting and was already raised in a note sent to FIFA.
  • During the meeting there was also a balance of the Intercontinental Sub20, played this Sunday between Peñarol and Benfica, in Montevideo.

The CONMEBOL Council, meeting in Santiago de Chile, resolved by unanimous decision to request FIFA that the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers retain their current format, with idea and return matches and in the all-against-all mode. After Qatar, the World Cup will have 48 participating teams.

Likewise, the Council also evaluated the Sub20 Intercontinental, played this Sunday at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, between the teams from Peñarol (Uruguay) and Benfica (Portugal). The match, organized within the framework of the strategic cooperation agreement between CONMEBOL and UEFA, was attended by more than 40,000 fans, while the television broadcast reached nearly 160 countries around the world.

The president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Dominguez, announced that a new chapter of this alliance will take place in September with the FInalissima de Futsal, with the participation of four continental champion teams from Europe (Portugal and Spain) and from South America (Argentina and Paraguay),

And also in February, when the champion women’s teams from South America and Europe meet. Brazil won the right to play this unprecedented match, by winning the last edition of the CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina. It will be measured against the England women’s team, in a stadium to be defined.

On the occasion, a review of the current situation in terms of improving playing fields and lighting in stadiums was also carried out. The importance of advancing in these investments was highlighted, considering the obvious benefits on the competitiveness of tournaments, both local and continental.
