It’s over for the legendary ANC political party, which has always been in power, which has been following setback following setback in recent times and or, quite simply, it no longer represents the capacities of a younger and more dependent South Africa the era of the USSR and Cuba
Today, mentalities have changed and the way to new horizons presents itself for the new generation which wants to start off on the right foot with its neighbors but also with certain African countries including Morocco.
Indeed, seven political parties of the South African opposition announced, the day before yesterday Monday, their decision to meet within a coalition with a view to ousting the African National Congress (ANC), in power since abolition of apartheid, during the next general elections scheduled for 2024.
“For the very first time since 1994, the ruling party is set to lose its majority,” the parties united behind the country’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), said in a joint statement. They added that the upcoming general elections provide an unprecedented opportunity for the people of South Africa to elect a new government capable of leading the country out of the multiple crises it faces.
Besides the DA, this coalition is made up of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the Freedom Front Plus, the National Freedom Party (NFP), ActionSA, the United Independent Party and the National Spectrum.
Once revered and respected for its role in the fight once morest the apartheid segregationist regime, the ANC is now a contested party within South African society. The results of the last local elections, held in November 2021, bear witness to the inexorable decline it is facing.
In this election, the ANC suffered an unprecedented setback by not crossing the 50% mark of the votes cast, for the first time since the first free elections in 1994.
It also lost three main metropolitan municipalities in the country, namely Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, to coalitions led by the Democratic Alliance.
With only 46% of the vote, the ANC remained very far from the 61.95% of the votes recorded in the 2011 election or the 53.91% of the votes cast in 2016.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was reappointed head of the ANC last December. The 70-year-old head of state is guaranteed a second term if his party wins.
