Gold Fields, South Africa’s leading gold company, announced on Tuesday May 31 that it had acquired a majority stake in the Canadian gold mining company Yamana Gold for an amount of 6.7 billion USD. This operation will have to be submitted for the approval of the competent regulatory authorities very soon. Under the terms of the agreement, Gold Fields shareholders will own approximately 61% and Yamana shareholders 39% in this new entity which will now operate under the name of Gold Fields Limited. The new structure will be headquartered in Johannesburg with operations in Ghana, Australia, Canada and South America.
