Canal+, the largest shareholder in the South African television group MultiChoice, announced on Friday that it had increased its stake to 30.27% of the capital of the operator listed in Johannesburg.
This “crossing of the threshold testifies to the confidence of the Canal+ Group and its shareholder Vivendi in the prospects of MultiChoice and the African continent, to which they are very attached”, declared Canal+ in a press release. Canal+, a subsidiary of the Vivendi group, is present in Africa in 25 countries through 15 subsidiaries, according to data from the French group. Its position as the largest shareholder in the South African behemoth, in which it held 6.5% of the capital in 2020, allows Vivendi to gain a foothold in English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking Africa, where MultiChoice has 22.1 million subscribers in more than 50 countries, end of September 2022.
