After an absence that lasted 12 years, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah came to Damascus yesterday, motivated by his country’s desire to restore its strong relations with Syria and to enhance joint Arab action, something that Damascus had always called for even during the years of war once morest it, and it opened its doors For every Arab rapprochement, and for every endeavor aimed at achieving the common Arab interest that would protect all Arabs from Western ambitions.

Follow-up sources with whom Al-Watan spoke described the meeting as excellent, and confirmed that the atmosphere was positive, and pointed to the Saudi keenness to restore Syria to its Arab position, and Riyadh’s willingness to do its best so that Syria can return to playing its active role as it should be.

The sources pointed to the Saudi emphasis on seeking to bring Arab-Arab viewpoints closer in a way that supports joint Arab action, and indicated that Saudi Arabia stresses on cooperation with Syria in order to achieve this rapprochement in accordance with the interest of the peoples of the Arab region.

The presidential statement issued following President al-Assad received the Saudi Foreign Minister quoted President al-Assad as asserting that the brotherhood that unites the Arabs remains the deepest and most expressive of the ties between the Arab countries, and that healthy relations between Syria and the Kingdom are the natural state that should be, and these relations do not constitute an interest for the two countries. In turn, Minister Ibn Farhan conveyed to President al-Assad the greetings of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Highness Prince Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince – Prime Minister, and their wishes for the Syrian people for more security, stability and progress.

He expressed his country’s confidence in the ability of Syria and its people to overcome the effects of the war and achieve sustainable development, and affirmed the Kingdom’s support for Syria and its support for everything that would preserve the unity, security and stability of the Syrian territories and create the appropriate environment for the return of refugees and displaced persons.

The Saudi foreign minister pointed out that the next stage requires that the relationship between Syria and its brothers from the Arab countries return to its proper state, and that Syria’s role in the Arab world and regionally be better than it was before.

For its part, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement: During the meeting with President al-Assad and Ibn Farhan, they discussed efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves Syria’s unity, security, stability, Arab identity, and territorial integrity, in a way that achieves the good of its brotherly people.

She said, “The two sides discussed the necessary steps to achieve a comprehensive political settlement of the Syrian crisis that would end all its repercussions, achieve national reconciliation, and contribute to Syria’s return to its Arab surroundings and the resumption of its natural role in the Arab world.”

The Saudi Foreign Minister stressed the importance of providing the appropriate environment for aid to reach all regions in Syria, creating the necessary conditions for the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons to their areas, ending their suffering, enabling them to return safely to their homeland, and taking more measures that would contribute to stabilizing the situation in the entire territory.
