Washington – Informed sources confirmed that the administration of US President Joe Biden and Saudi Arabia are working to finalize an agreement on American security guarantees and assistance in the nuclear field for civilian purposes.
A working draft sets out principles and proposals aimed at putting US-led efforts in the troubled region back on track, following things were thrown into disarray following the October 7 attack by the Palestinian faction movement on Israel and the outbreak of war in Gaza, according to two sources who have seen the draft.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said yesterday, Thursday, “We are very close to reaching an agreement” on the US-Saudi part of the package, and indicated that the details might be settled “in a very short time.”
According to foreign diplomats in the Gulf and sources in Washington, this part of the plan is likely to relate to official American guarantees for the defense of the Kingdom, in addition to Saudi Arabia obtaining more advanced American weapons in exchange for stopping Chinese arms purchases and placing restrictions on Beijing’s investments in the country.
Informed sources expected that the US-Saudi security agreement would include the exchange of modern technologies with Riyadh, including those related to artificial intelligence.
A US official, who requested anonymity, said the terms are expected to be completed within weeks.
