Sound Recognition is Unlocked on HomePods

With the launch of HomePod of second generation, it was announced the feature of Sound Recognition, along with other novelties, such as the humidity and temperature sensor. It was even discovered that the HomePod mini already had this component, albeit in a “dormant” form, which was activated after the presentation of the new model.

And today, the release of Sound Recognition, promised for the northern hemisphere spring, finally happened! Users of second-generation or mini HomePods who have upgraded their speakers to version 16.4.1 of the software, released last week along with updates for other Apple systems, can now configure the feature in the Home app (Home).

Using the microphones included in the speaker, the device can now detect, for example, the sound of a carbon monoxide/smoke/fire alarm and send a notification to your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

That is, having a HomePod, you do not have to worry about purchasing a smart alarm, given that the speaker itself will detect the sound. And, if the user has a HomeKit-compatible indoor camera system, it is also possible to see the images in real time to better follow what is happening – something especially useful when accidents like this happen and you are not at home.

Just like communicating with Siri through your device, Sound Recognition has due regard for your privacy. The detection is made on the device itself, which sends the notification to the user’s device securely with end-to-end encryption.

It is worth remembering that the same resource is already available on the iPhone since iOS 14, in the Accessibility of the settings. On the smartphone, a range of different sounds can be recognized, which would also be interesting on the HomePod itself. The detection of the sound of breaking glass, for example, would be very useful in the domestic environment.
