“Everyone has their addictions, for me it’s music”
Doctor specializing in ophthalmology, singer by passion and vice versa. The bubbly Soukaïna Ohid aka Souki S is lucky to be able to combine both. While in Morocco to promote a new music video, she sat down with us to share a little regarding her experience.
Having arrived on the music scene in 2021, Souki S. wasted no time. A native of Casablanca, this young Belgian-Moroccan was able to establish herself and confirm a real gift from her first song “Sablier”. Eager to perfect her voice, she was coached in Paris by the illustrious Angie Berthias. An album was released two years later. Entitled “Vérité”, it is made up of several titles and distills beautiful emotions. Proud of her roots, Souki S wants to make it known from an artistic point of view. Her compositions are an ode to Morocco since following titles in French, Arabic and Spanish, she decided to express herself in Darija. “ This allows me to further strengthen my connection with the Moroccan public and contribute to the development of the local music scene. ». You’ve been singing for a little over two years now and have said that music has been a lifesaver for you. In which way ?
She has always been a true lifeline and source of comfort. In difficult times, she was my refuge. Everyone has their addictions, for me it’s music. My compositions are imbued with deep messages and sometimes inspired by painful experiences. Practicing my art allowed me to transform these experiences into something beautiful and meaningful, to share my struggles as well as my triumphs with the outside world.
What is your musical style and what put you on this path?
My current genre mainly focuses on Afropop in Darija. An orientation born from public demand.
You started by singing in other languages. Today you are making a shift to darijophone, why?
I simply realized that using darija had a stronger impact. This linguistic connection was the driving force behind my transition. I am convinced that this change will further strengthen my connection with the Moroccan public. By choosing to express myself in my native language, I can create music that is more accessible and authentic. This approach is a way of celebrating Moroccan culture and identity.
Were you afraid when you launched into this universe? Afraid of not finding a place for yourself, of competition or of an environment that is said to be merciless?
To be honest, fear is not part of my state of mind. Music remains a source of pleasure and happiness for me. I recognize that the music industry can be an unforgiving world; However, I do not consider music as a competition with others, but as a personal challenge that brings me well-being and satisfaction. My goal is to challenge myself and become the best version of myself. It’s not a race, but a marathon, just like the medicine I made my career in. My experience has taught me to persevere and move forward despite challenges.
What was the most memorable experience when you started?
Rejection from people close to me. They doubted that my first single might surpass their own music. It’s often the people you’re most familiar with who end up causing you the most pain. I realized that being successful meant I wouldn’t necessarily have many friends. As an actor in the movie “American Gangster” said, ” Success generates enmities. Your success is turning once morest you. What will you do ? Kill your success? It’s simple: you either succeed and make enemies, or you fail and make a few friends. Matter of choice. »
Your new music video is finally out, how did its conceptualization go with your partners?
It was a difficult process. A key person I had worked with left us in difficulty following filming, to fly to other skies. I had to fight to save the clip, despite the obstacles. Our efforts finally succeeded thanks to a lot of perseverance and we are all very proud of it.
Did you get involved at all levels?
Totally and very meticulously. I am a great perfectionist, whether in the medical, musical, or other fields. I carefully monitor every detail. I personally supervised the entire creation process of “Chebba” with the support of my team and my manager.
What was the reception from the Moroccan public?
He was excellent! Less than 3 days following its release, the clip had already exceeded 200,000 views on YouTube. This is a promising sign for the future, especially since it got off to a better start than the previous “Sablier,” which had exceeded one million views.
In the long term, do you think you can continue to pursue two equally demanding and opposing careers? If I had to make a choice?
For me, these vocations are complementary, one does not go without the other. When you are determined, you can succeed in reconciling things. I have a real passion for both fields, which makes the transition between them easier. My intention is to continue my career as a doctor. Life sometimes offers us opportunities that are important to seize. The future remains uncertain and no one can predict what will happen tomorrow. For now, I manage to balance the two. Time will reveal to me what awaits me.
What are your projects ?
Right now, I’m working on a mini-album in Darija, scheduled for release in 2024. I’m also preparing the stage for next summer, Inshallah. Only happiness in summary and even more sharing with my audience.
