The president of SOS Prisonniers Gabon (SPG), an association working for the respect of human rights in prisons, Lionel Engonga, announced in a press conference held on Saturday, July 13, 2024 in Libreville, the official launch of the activities of the project “Access to justice for prisoners during electoral periods”, financed by the French embassy in Gabon.

“This project will help around twenty disadvantaged prisoners in the prisons of Libreville, Port-Gentil and Oyem”said Mr. Engonga, who is also a transitional MP.

The humanitarian project will run until next December. It aims to raise awareness among people deprived of their liberty and prison security officers regarding the need to engage in the fight for respect for human rights; to remove the masks of flagrant violations of criminal procedures and to lead the authorities, it is indicated, “to redouble their efforts for the humanization of prisons.”

“We express our greatest gratitude to the President of the Transition, HE Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema for his clear desire to make our country an example in terms of respect for human rights, because justice, impartiality and dignity are values ​​enshrined in the first article of the transition charter.”he noted with deep conviction.

For SOS Prisonniers Gabon, “this is finally our rise towards the independence of justice and respect for human rights.”
