Amidst the forest fires in Canadaa group of four women from the province of British Columbia were salvo after staying taken in a glacier. What made the rescue the appeal was possible Emergency SOS via satelliteused to contact help and which led to them being found and rescued.
According to the CBC Newsthe women were hiking and camping in the Kootenay region when the wind picked up. Sparks began to fall on their tent, so they ran and tried to escape. However, they ended up trapped in a place known as the MacBeth Icefield, with the flames approaching.
They managed to send a message using the Emergency SOS satellite on an iPhone to the rescue services at the scene, which made it possible for the rescue to take place. The process was, however, quite complicated, with the smoke from the fire making it difficult for the helicopter pilot to see, in an environment described by the rescue manager as a “war scenario”.
He also said that the professionals were lucky to be able to fly the helicopter at the site, considering the conditions. It was almost necessary to abandon the rescue attempt, according to him. The women, however, were found exactly where the message sent showed, something “really unusual and very satisfying”, in addition to demonstrating the precision of the resource.

“In this case, the cell phone literally saved their lives,” said the Kaslo search and rescue manager. He also stressed the importance of people being prepared for emergencies during the fire season, so as to avoid dangerous situations and know how to respond to other unexpected occurrences.
When the four women were rescued, evacuation warnings were being issued in the area due to a lightning storm that had caused the fires. However, the group managed to get to a safe spot on the glacier, where they could stay for a few days.
Emergency SOS via satellite only works on iPhones 14 and later and in some countries, such as the United States, Canada, Portugal and others in the northern hemisphere. It is not yet known when the feature will arrive in Brazil. It works free of charge for two years from the purchase of the device, if the user lives in a country where it is available.
It’s good that this story ended quickly and well thanks to the resource, right?
