Sorong City Bapenda employees force taxpayers to pay IDR 130 million a month (MI)

THE Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) found that an employee at the Sorong City Regional Revenue Agency (Bappenda) routinely extorted taxpayers. The employee asked for a deposit of Rp130 million every month, but was not fired.

“This is clearly a gratification, but the person concerned is still being retained at Bappenda because of the element of closeness,” said the Head of the KPK Region V Coordination and Supervision Directorate (Korsup) Task Force, Dian Patria, in a written statement on Saturday (6/7).

Dian did not specify who the employee in question was. However, he said that the employee might continue to squeeze taxpayers because he entered the government through nepotism.

The employee’s actions were also considered to have harmed the Sorong City Government. According to Dian, regional tax revenues have decreased due to this practice.

“If we look at the Sorong City APBD posture, it shows that regional income from taxes only reached 5.13 percent. However, employee spending reached 41.23 percent,” said Dian.

Tax revenue in Sorong is considered very low compared to other eastern regions of Indonesia. The percentage of tax revenue in other regions has reached tens.

“While big cities in the East have reached double digits for their percentage, with employee spending below 30 percent,” said Dian. (Z-10)
