Today, only Eurostar, which bought the Thalys brand, offers to reach the Belgian capital, only with a high-speed train.
Speed is no longer the obsession of train operators. After the slow Ouigo, classic trains at low prices, or the return of night trains, SNCF says it is considering the return of a classic link between Paris and Brussels with SNCB, its Belgian counterpart, by the end of 2024.
Today, only Eurostar, which bought the Thalys brand (doomed to disappear in 2023), offers to reach the Belgian capital with a high-speed train. This represents a certain cost for travelers. Such a journey with a conventional train would make it possible to offer lower fares in exchange for a longer journey time.
Several daily round trips
“This new alternative to road transport, with an intermediate travel time between road and high-speed train, would offer several daily round trips to travellers. The journey would be operated with conventional trains (locomotive and passenger cars) adapted to the international traffic”, explain the two operators.
“The study is underway to confirm the feasibility of the project, with the objective of commissioning as soon as possible. The schedules and any intermediate stops also remain to be confirmed”, they add.
SNCF and SNCB, which ensure that ‘the ambition is to allow the greatest number of passengers to make this international journey for the best possible duration and for a competitive price’, have notified their intention to operate this new service with their respective rail regulator.
For the record, remember that Paris and Brussels were the first European capitals connected by train in 1846.
