Patients with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) should regularly measure their blood sugar, ie the amount of sugar present in their blood. For this, they practice blood glucose self-monitoring (ASG) which requires the use of a blood glucose meter: this device analyzes the composition of a drop of blood, taken from the fingertip.
Researchers from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (in South Korea) have succeeded in developing a new (less invasive) way of measuring blood sugar: an implant that measures the level of sugar in the body, without blood sampling .
An implant that measures blood sugar in real time (and without a blood test)
Inserted under the skin, this implant (which is only at the beginning of its development) uses electromagnetic waves to measure the quantity of glucose in the interstitial liquid, this fluid which is between the cells of the body. And according to Korean researchers, this implant would be as reliable as a blood test to measure blood sugar: moreover, it would also be able to monitor blood sugar levels in real time. A real breakthrough.
As a reminder, in a non-diabetic person, fasting blood sugar should be between 0.70 g / L and 1.10 g / L. About 1 hour 30 minutes following a meal, this value should be less than 1.40 g / L, according to the French Federation of Diabetics (FFD).
