Sony has announced technology that can address concerns regarding forged content using artificial intelligence. As the Japanese manufacturer explains, it is a digital signature that your own devices will apply to photographs for certify that the content was not generated by artificial intelligence.

Prepared in partnership with Associated Press, the technology consists of an authenticity seal that grants a “birth certificate” to photographs. With this, images are signed at the exact moment they are captured by a device’s sensor. The expectation is that this feature will soon arrive on Sony cell phones.

Already under development for the brand’s professional cameras in a firmware update, this tool aims to combat falsified images using generative artificial intelligence in techniques such as deep fake.

The first devices that will benefit from the technology will be the Sony a7S III, Alpha 9 III and Alpha 1 from Sony. The sensor signature tool will also be made available to users of the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI, scheduled for the first half of 2024.

Artificial intelligence platforms have gained massive popularity in recent months, especially DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. These models allow you to create an image from a simple text description, and the results can impress with their realism.

With the rise of these services, there is growing concern around the use of purposefully generated images to spread false information online, especially for images for journalistic purposes.

In addition to journalistic content, other areas can also be severely harmed by this type of content. A German photographer tested how prepared humans are to detect fake content by entering a photography contest with an image generated with artificial intelligence. He won the competition.

“False and manipulated images are a major concern for news organizations,” comments David Ake, director of the photography division at Associated Press. “Not only do they contribute to misinformation, they also end up undermining public trust in real and accurate images,” said the expert.
