The helmet will adopt a shape and a design similar to that of its controllers, which we had already seen some time ago.
Little by little, the next virtual reality headset from Playstation, the PS VR2, is being revealed. Just a year ago, Sony revealed that it was working on a new model of VR headset, more efficient than the first, but also and above all requiring fewer cables. Beginning of the year and following showing the PS VR2 Sense controllers, the Japanese firm leaned more on his helmet, without however revealing the design. It’s now done, since Sony unveiled the look of its PS VR2 this followingnoon.
Compatible with the Playstation 5, Sony’s new headset will use its graphic charter, just like the controllers. The interior will be black while the exterior will be cream white. In terms of design, the helmet and the controllers will have the shape of an “orb”, in order to “to symbolize the 360° vision that players will have once immersed in their virtual worlds”.
Further improved ergonomics
Sony also claims to have extensive tests on the ergonomics of the helmet, so that the user forgets that he is wearing a helmet, but also so that it adapts to all types of skulls. Despite the integrated motor allowing haptic feedback in the helmet and therefore vibrations, Sony claims to have made it thinner and lighter than the first model. A ventilation system is now integrated and located on the top of the helmet, preventing fogging of the lenses.
“When I started working on the design of the PlayStation VR2 headset, I immediately wanted to focus on creating a ventilation system that provides good air circulation […]”says Yujin Morisawa, senior art designer at Sony. “Our engineers came up with this idea to improve ventilation and prevent lens fogging, which will provide gamers with better immersion in their VR games.“
Little icing on the cake: Sony has added several thousand Playstation symbols (square, cross, circle and triangle) on the front and back of the helmet, as is already the case on the PS5 and the DualSense.
As a reminder, the technical sheet of the PS VR2 is significantly revised upwards compared to the first model. The combined resolution of the two small OLED screens will reach 4000×2040 pixels, with a refresh rate oscillating between 90 and 120Hz. The field of vision will increase from 100 to 110°, while eye movement tracking technology will be included.
Sony concludes by stating that the developers have already received the development kit of the helmet and that they are already working on the development of new games. One title has already been confirmed, Horizon Call of the Mountain, and it’s still unclear whether games from the first model will be compatible with this one.
