Sony reveals its response to Xbox Game Pass

After months of rumors, here is the new PlayStation Plus. Forget Spartacus, now everything is official and comes in three offers from 60 to 120 euros which will be available gradually from June.

We knew it under the code name Spartacus, here is now very officially the new PlayStation Plus from Sony. This new subscription formula should bring together the old PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now within the same service. Sony made the announcement on Tuesday and said the rollout would begin in June in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the countries where PS Plus has been offered so far.

PlayStation Plus plans and prices

We start with the most important, here is the new grid of PlayStation Plus packages.

  • PS Plus Essential: 8.99 euros per month (24.99 euros for 3 months, 59.99 euros per year)
  • PS Plus Extra: 13.99 euros per month (39.99 euros for 3 months, 99.99 euros per year)
  • PS Plus Premium: 16.99 euros per month (49.99 euros for 3 months, 119.99 euros per year)

The old PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now are disappearing. PlayStations players will then be faced with its three offers.

PS Plus Essential: online play and 2 free games per month

For an unchanged price with the old PS Plus, the “PS Plus Essential” package includes its advantages: access to online play, storage of online saves, promotions on the PlayStation Store, and games offered each month.

Beware, Sony is now promising only two downloadable games each month. We were used to seeing 3 or 4 games offered on PlayStation Plus each month, including PS5 games. Nothing is specified in this regard.

  • Price: 8.99 euros per month (24.99 euros for 3 months, 59.99 euros per year)

PS Plus Extra: the catalog of games to download on PS4 and PS5

The next package is called the PS Plus Extra and includes all the benefits of the PS Plus Essential, with a big supplement: access to a catalog of around 400 PS4 and PS5 games.

This is the closest thing to Xbox Game Pass, but beware, Sony does not promise to integrate its next games as soon as they are launched. These are hits from PlayStation Studios or partners for download to the console. Among the first arrivals, we can mention Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War, Returnal, Mortal Kombat 11 and Death Stranding.

  • Price: 13.99 euros per month (39.99 euros for 3 months, 99.99 euros per year)

PS Plus Premium: cloud gaming and “classic” games PlayStation

Again, the PS Plus Premium plan takes the advantages of the previous plan and adds additional extras. This time, Sony offers us a retrogaming service with 340 games, including a catalog of “great classics” PlayStation, PS2 and PSP to download or stream, or PS3 games only available in streaming.

Access to streaming games is done in cloud gaming through what was previously the PlayStation Now. You must therefore reside in a territory that offered the service (United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden).

That’s not all: PS Plus Premium subscribers will also be entitled to limited-time trial versions of certain games. We can imagine being able to test God Of Ragnarok for a few hours when released, or one of the many multiplayer games in production at PlayStation.

  • Price: 16.99 euros per month (49.99 euros for 3 months, 119.99 euros per year)
