Sony announced this week that it has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide. This is a major achievement, especially considering how much trouble the company has been in keeping with demand. This change may finally begin in the coming months. Sony plans to implement a “significant increase in PS5 production” in the second half of 2022.
PS5 production to increase in the second half of 2022
Veronica Rogers, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at Sony, shared the following statement with GamesIndustry.biz:
We are pleased to share that Sony has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally. Since the launch of PS5, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-generation gaming console that has won the world and we want to take this time to thank fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives and inspires us to invent new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue to create the best place to play.
That’s all well and good, but what regarding the millions of consumers who haven’t yet got a PS5? This is where the focus on production comes in.
She added, “For fans who haven’t yet gotten their hands on a console, please know that we’re planning a huge increase in PS5 production this year and are working endlessly to make sure there’s a PlayStation 5 available for everyone who wants one.”
This isn’t the first time Sony has stuck to that promise. During a briefing to investors last month, Sony CEO Jim Ryan stated, “We are planning a significant increase in console production, to take us to production levels we haven’t achieved before.”
