The new PS5 appeared at select retailers in Australia last month.
Now, the well-known foreign YouTuber-Austin Evans has dismantled the new PS5 and found that it is not only lighter, but SONY has actually completely remodeled the internal design.
The new PS5 uses a smaller motherboard, a different cooling method, and even a change to the SSD casing, all of which have helped reduce weight, but the appearance has not changed significantly.
The real big change is the updated motherboard, which is regarding 2 inches smaller and dissipates slightly differently, thanks to additional heat pipes on the back and a smaller heatsink.
SONY launched a model with a smaller heatsink last year (1100), and Austin Evans points out that this 2022 PS5 (1200) weighs regarding 2.5 pounds with the motherboard and heatsink, which is 1 pound lighter than the original design (1000).
SONY has moved a lot of components with the new motherboard design, which means that the CMOS battery is now completely hidden under the heatsink, where it was previously exposed, making it easier to replace, and now Austin Evans points out that the PS5 must be completely disassembled to replace the CMOS battery.
The SSD casing of the 2022 PS5 has also changed. It no longer has a PCB covering the entire length, and part of the metal is exposed. It is not clear why SONY changed this design. Austin Evans speculates that it may help improve heat dissipation.
All of these changes may bring some enhancements to the new PS5, with Austin Evans saying that the 2022 PS5 consumes regarding 20-30W less power during gaming, while still offering regarding the same level of noise and heat output.
