Sony marginally raised its annual net profit and sales forecasts on Thursday. The Japanese giant wants to be confident in the growth of its results in video games, music and image sensors, in particular thanks to the cheap yen.

For the entire 2023/24 financial year which will end at the end of next March, Sony is now counting on a net profit of 880 billion yen (5.25 billion francs) instead of 860 billion yen in its latest forecasts. in August. This would represent a decline of 12.5% ​​over one year. It also raised its turnover target, expected to increase by 13% (compared to 11% previously) to 12,400 billion yen (73.95 billion francs).

But Sony still forecasts an operating profit of 1,170 billion yen (-3.2% over one year).

In its video game division, the most lucrative with music, Sony notably benefited in its second quarter (July-September) from a clear improvement in sales of its PlayStation 5 console with 4.9 million units sold (+48 % over one year).

This console released in 2020, which struggled for many months to meet strong demand due to supply chain disruptions linked to the pandemic, has now sold more than 46 million copies since its launch.

The group also raised its forecasts for results in its music business, expecting an improvement in its revenues linked to streaming but also an increase in its sales of mobile games, also recorded in this segment.

However, it revised its sales targets downwards in cinema, explaining in its press release that it was suffering the impact of social movements in Hollywood which notably forced it to postpone certain releases.

An agreement was reached on Wednesday between the actors and the major studios to end the strike which has paralyzed the production of films and series in the United States for months, after a similar agreement announced at the end of September with the screenwriters.

Sony achieved a net profit of 200.1 billion yen in the second quarter, a sharp drop of 29% year-on-year, attributed in particular to a decline in its sales of electronic products such as televisions, and a drop in its results in financial services.

It saw its operating profit fall by 28.8% to 263 billion yen, but its sales increased by 7.7% to 2,827 billion yen.
