Paris (awp/afp) – The Japanese group Sony sees sales of its PlayStation 5 growing in 2024, following having put an end this year to the shortages which had affected it since its beginnings, the head of its branch told AFP on Thursday French dedicated to video games.
Console sales generally tend to plateau following a few years of marketing, before decreasing as the arrival of a new generation of machines approaches.
For the PS5, launched in November 2020, “we will still be growing next year,” assured Emmanuel Grange, during Paris Games, the largest French trade show in the sector.
The general manager of Sony Interactive Entertainment France did not specify how many PS5s had so far been purchased in France. This summer, the Japanese giant revealed that more than 41 million consoles had been sold worldwide in nearly three years.
To reach a wider audience, Sony notably announced a new controller designed to make gaming easier for people with disabilities, an issue long neglected by this industry.
Called “Access” and launched on December 6, it consists of a joystick and large buttons arranged in a circle to be easy to use.
After several years of growth driven in particular by confinements linked to the covid crisis, the French video game market fell by 1.6% in 2022, with an overall turnover of 5.5 billion euros. A slowdown due in part to difficulties in supplying components for the new consoles.
For 2023, the boss of the PlayStation brand in France expects a rebound and “a growing market”.
“There is dynamism in the video game market, as shown by the public” present at the show, assured Mr. Grange.
The organizers of Paris Games Week, which runs until Sunday at Porte de Versailles, hope to attract “around 200,000 visitors” this year for its return to the pre-covid format, compared to 150,000 in 2022.
