The film “Children of Karim’s Harem,” which is currently showing in Egyptian and Arab cinemas, sparked a verbal exchange between the artist Mustafa Qamar, the hero of the film, and the Egyptian film critic Tareq El-Shenawy, following the latter criticized the work and described it as “not belonging to the recognized art of cinema.”

The movie “Children of Karim’s Harem” came 18 years following the first part of it was shown in 2005 under the title “Harem Karim.” It was written by Zainab Aziz, directed by Ali Idris, and starring Mustafa Qamar, Bushra, Dalia Al-Behairi, Basma, and Ola Ghanem. And Tim Qamar, whose story takes place 18 years following the events of the first part, following the death of “Karim’s” wife, who is played by Mustafa Qamar, and the ignition of love conflicts between (the children of Karim’s harem), including Karim’s daughter, whose role is embodied by the artist Rana Rais.

Al-Shennawi said in statements to the “ET in Arabic” website that “the film has nothing to do with the art of cinema,” noting that “the artist Mustafa Qamar’s singing stardom has died out, and therefore he is no longer a movie star capable of presenting a successful movie.” He also praised the position of the artist Yasmine. Abdul Aziz by not participating in the work.

These statements caused Qamar to attack El-Shenawy through his official page on the photo and video exchange site “Instagram”, in which he referred during his post to his previous request from the Egyptian critic not to talk or mention his artistic works in his conversations, and said that “Tariq El-Shenawy’s talk regarding the movie (Children of a Harem) Karim came without watching the work,” Qamar also asked his audience who watched the film to respond to him.

For her part, film critic Maha Matbouli believes that the movie “Children of Karim’s Harem” was distinguished by the presence of harmony between its adult and young heroes. She told Asharq Al-Awsat: “The credit here goes to its hero, Mustafa Qamar, who gave the opportunity to the younger generation, in addition to the craftsmanship of director Ali Idris.”

She added, “Ali Idris has a distinctive cinematic vision, characterized by the depth of his talents that he can employ with each scene according to the emotions of the artist standing in front of him, and this was strongly demonstrated during the romantic scenes that brought together the heroes of the work.”

When asked regarding Mustafa Qamar, she said: “Mustafa Qamar is a multi-talented artist. He made a good film and was able to prove during his scenes that he is capable of presenting a new generation of young talents.”

She explained: “We cannot ignore the artistic harmony between Amr Abdel Jalil and the artist Bushra, as it is one of the best artistic duets in the film, followed by the harmony between the artist Dalia El-Behairy and the artist Khaled Sarhan.”

On the other hand, critic Ahmed Kamal, presenter of the “Bataa Films” program, said on social media, to “Asharq Al-Awsat”: “Without a doubt, the artist Mustafa Qamar is one of the most important singers who contributed to Egyptian and Arab cinema, but I do not understand why he thought regarding it in the first place.” Presenting a second part of the movie (Harem Karim), especially since I felt following watching the movie that time stopped for Qamar in the year 2005.”

Kamal demanded that Mustafa Qamar be evaluated cinematically before talking regarding the experience of the film “Children of Karim’s Harem,” saying that “all of Qamar’s films that he presented following the screening of the film (Gang of Doctor Omar), which he presented with the artist Yasmine Abdel Aziz in 2008, did not achieve any cinematic success, and that His last series (A Knight Without a Passport) was not felt by anyone, and it is evidence that the field of cinema and drama is no longer available to him.” As he says.

Kamal believes that “the story of the second part of the film lacked from the beginning two of the most important elements of the success of the first part, namely its heroine, the artist Yasmine Abdel Aziz, who apologized for not participating, and the artist Talaat Zakaria, who left our world.”
