The agency that coordinates emergencies in the city of Annapolis near Washington said it was a sonic boom. This can be heard when an airplane moves through the air at supersonic speeds. According to the agency, it was caused by a flight approved by the US Department of Defense. At first there was no further information.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, reported that the incident was related to a small plane crash in Virginia. There was initially no official confirmation of this. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that around 3:30 p.m. (local time) – shortly following the bang – a small Cessna Citation aircraft had crashed near Montebello in the state of Virginia, south of Washington. It was en route from Elizabethton, Tennessee, to Long Island, New York. The Washington Post reported that the small plane did not respond to the authorities’ address. The Pentagon initially did not comment on request.
