Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story – A Fun and Entertaining Adventure for Young Players

As you climbed to the top of the mountain and ended your epic journey with Kratos and Atreus in 2018’s God of War, did you ever wonder that there was a version of this story that might be put in the hands of children to keep them entertained a couple of hours? Probably not, right? Well, if you do, Riot Forge and Tequila Works have the perfect solution. I won’t tell you that Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is a copy of Sony Santa Monica Adventure, but there are some obvious similarities. First up, this spin-off of Riot Games’ popular MOBA takes players to Runeterra’s Freljord region, known for its icy, Nordic aesthetic. Secondly, the story revolves around the dual protagonist duo, which is the little boy Nunu and the adorable snowman Willump, and within two minutes you start to see how these two work in operation as well as Kratos and Atreu Similarities to Si’s performance in the 2018 game. The main problem is that Nunu is the protagonist of this game, which means it’s almost a reverse setting of God of War, with Willump (the equivalent of Kratos) being a secondary character who steps in and protects Nunu for most of the story. The third is a cameo, reminiscent of Kratos and Atreus’ encounters with rival gods. In Song of Nunu, you’ll meet other League of Legends Champions, some of whom are friendly and will help you along your journey, like Ornn and Braum, and some who prove to be a bigger problem, like Encounter with Volibear. Beyond that, you have a story that literally revolves around heading to the mountain to find answers, collectibles in the form of painted murals, and a gameplay system that combines platforming, exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat. It’s not a shameless copy by any means, but there’s clear inspiration in what Tequila Works has created here, even if every part of this game is simpler and more junior, as it’s clearly built to suit a younger generation of players . Here’s an ad: Familiarity doesn’t take away from the game’s charm, however. Nunu and Willump are fantastic protagonists who bounce off each other and are narrated and crafted in a way that allows them to express a wide range of emotions. The additional cameos and characters feel like they belong in the story too and contribute to it effectively. The level design, while a little too basic at times, works and introduces enough new mechanics and systems to keep it fresh. While this game, simply put, works… it’s nothing we’ve seen before, even if the flute and convoluted system does try to make the title punch above its weight. The key area where Song of Nunu sets itself apart from other games is how it utilizes Nunu and Willump’s abilities. Nunu can use his flute (Svellsongur) to play notes, which are played by pressing the triggers and bumpers on the Switch (or controller) simultaneously or separately. With the right combination, Nunu can allow Willump to interact with the environment and even influence the creatures found around Freyr Fjord to lead and control them. Willump can use his icy magical abilities to interact and create real ice, which can be used to solve puzzles and reach otherwise inaccessible areas. With these two unique mechanics, Song of Nunu’s mission is to solve environmental puzzles and even acquire some collectibles found in hidden locations around the world. Here’s an ad: There seems to be a lot of depth on offer here, but in reality it’s superficial depth. Song of Nunu’s mechanics never get any deeper than when it’s first presented to you, but considering it’s clearly an adventure game for young adults, I think this more basic style works. Beyond that, the game really adds characters to many of the iconic characters we know and love from League of Legends, and Song of Nunu is a fun way to expand your understanding of this fantasy world beyond just Spend hours in the MOBA itself. Song of Nunu’s main enemy is the game’s stiffness. The platformer doesn’t really leave the player any wiggle room, and combat is slow and steady. Some puzzles are also overly complex, causing more proficient players to struggle and struggle to find clues or answers that the game never provides. Song of Nunu, simply put, often comes out in its own way. Mountain. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is the next interesting step for Riot to expand beyond MOBAs and continue telling stories in the League of Legends universe. For anyone interested in the fantasy realm, this is a fun way to learn more regarding a few key Champions without having to learn the ropes of the popular competitive game. There’s plenty to enjoy here for young players, too. It’s easy to pick up and understand, has interesting mechanics and systems, and a vibrant and colorful world. Just don’t expect to be blown away by what Tequila Works has built here, because all in all, this is a very predictable and familiar title with a League of Legends polish.
