ALGIERS – The Algerian Electricity and Gas Distribution Company – Algiers Region – (a subsidiary of Sonelgaz) has this year implemented several projects aimed at improving the quality of its services, especially in light of the growing consumption of electricity, a company statement said on Tuesday.
On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of Sonelgaz, which is celebrating under the slogan “55 Years of Achievements”, in a press release the company presented the main achievements made since the beginning of 2024 with a view to improving the services provided to customers, including the extension of the electricity network from 14,996 kilometers in 2023 to 15,192 kilometers in 2024.
Likewise, the gas network will increase from 6,211 km in 2023 to 6,262 km in 2024, meaning more than 50 km has been completed this year, the release added.
Sonelgaz-Distribution also reported that there are 41 power transformers in the capital, including three (3) new transformers recently commissioned in Baraki-North, Bab El Oued, and a modular substation in Khraïcia.
In addition to these transformers, three (3) more transformers will be commissioned in Bouzareah, Bachdjarah and Eucalyptus “in the coming days”, 20 mobile transformers and 52 other transformers will be commissioned by summer 2024.
The Algiers distribution area, which has more than 1.17 million electricity customers and more than 827,000 gas customers, has been provided with 31 medium and low voltage transformers, which were built in the first half of 2024 and are not part of the 2024 summer plan.
In the first half of 2024, the company continued its efforts and connected 26,365 customers in urban areas to the electricity network and 19,942 customers to the gas network.
As for the project to equip homes with carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, the Sonelgaz-distribution said in a press release that since the launch of the action on December 5, the number of carbon monoxide detectors installed has exceeded 586,000, or more than 293,000 homes, and by the end of June last year, it was specified that two devices would continue to be installed in each home.
Regarding the EV charging station project, 22 charging stations have been constructed at 19 locations and another five (5) charging stations are under construction, according to the same source, adding that the company plans to build 91 charging stations by 2024.
The press release states that Sonelgaz is working to connect agricultural operations and activity areas in line with the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Recalling the record levels of electricity consumption set in the summer of 2023 and 2024 following the heatwave, Sonelgaz announced that as part of its proactive planning, a plan will be developed to reinforce the network, especially in “sensitive areas” to avoid any blackouts.
