“Sometimes we eat our flesh!”

“The Touring Machine” is coming to Patras in unprecedented numbers from today until Sunday, as the work of Benoit Soles counts more than 260 sold-outs in Athens, Thessaloniki and Cyprus, where it was performed.

Orpheus Augousidis brings to life the role of Alan Turing, a legendary personality who changed the course of history, since he is the man who broke the Nazi code and changed the course of the Second World War, contributing decisively to its end in 1945. Historians estimate how his contribution helped prevent millions of deaths!

The play is presented in the direction and adaptation of Odysseus Papaspiliopoulos, with Orfea Augustidis, who, asking him to describe the hero of the play in just one sentence, noted:

“It’s a work about a man who suffered a lot, but lived bravely!”

Perhaps in the end this is the conclusion, the story of Alan Turing, the man who changed the course of the Second World War and because of his homosexuality, was led to exile and finally to suicide…

The popular protagonist tells “P” about the project:
“We have “tampered” with the project. It was a very big decision to change it from a conventional dramatic work, to make it a monologue and to put the events inside the hero’s mind. And to place it in the last moments of his life and while he was confined to his home, where he committed suicide. Because of his sexual preferences, which at that time in Great Britain, was considered a criminal act or so. What impresses me is when many viewers come back to see the show. I am very honored by this. A performance that they saw, felt, experienced and choose to come and see again. There are spectators who have come two or three times.”

“UNLIMITED AWESOME”
“I have an unbounded admiration for Alan Turing, but I do not try to imitate his ways or his thinking. I would say that I use his personality, as a reason and as a source of inspiration. Creating a scent, a shadow, a choreography that reminds us of him, as we ultimately think he was. And this, to try to leave an imprint on the viewer’s memory and speaking of Turing, to also refer to a more general context of humanity, love, generosity, bravery and diversity. Essentially, both I and Odysseus, as a director, taking what we know and sense about his life, added to it our inspiration and sensitivity to tell our own story, as it emerges through Turgink’s story.”

“COURAGE IS REQUIRED”
“There are very magical nights, when even though the words and the positions on the stage are the same, something can happen and the whole show will rise to the top! That is, to feel that you are getting up off the ground and not knowing where all this will take you!
It’s a tightrope walk, but without the risk of falling. Because in order to go out and do a monologue, you should be sure of several things. Which means you’ll be afraid of falling. You should always look up and be free from fears. The monologue requires a bravery, from the actor, not to say that ignorance of the danger helps.
You must know, that at any moment everything around you can be… demolished. But you have to believe in yourself, that whatever happens you will face it.”

“I AM DISSATISFIED”

“Yes, I am restless and sometimes dissatisfied. The second, although it hides a crack in people’s personality, is reality. Because I’m human too. But sometimes that person is tortured, but okay, we’ve accepted that. That sometimes we artists have to eat our flesh, in order to make… what we call “delivery”. In my thoughts, there are moments when I say to myself “calm down, it’s okay”, but he… doesn’t listen!

“DIFFICULT TO DISCHARGE”
“And after the shows, I carry inside me an emotional area that every time I open up from his personality, in order to be mentally ready on stage. And it somehow coincides with the personal moment I find myself in, after the show. I do not carry the man, because I do not know him. Alan Turing, is the occasion to tell a part of his story, in a certain way, using certain theatrical tools. It’s not easy to unwind after the show is over. You suddenly find yourself at 11 at night with a lot of overvoltage.”
