Somersaulting to Success: Paraguay’s Quiet Gymnastics Uprising

Asunción, IP Agency.- In an exclusive interview with our media, Naomi Valenzo, president of the Pan American Gymnastics Union and international judge, shared her impressions about the inauguration of the Special Olympics in Asunción and the development of the sport in Paraguay.

Valenzo described the opening of the Special Olympics as a rewarding experience. «It was a very pleasant experience. The production was of the highest level, the program was very agile, a large audience showed a great atmosphere and support for all the delegations and the messages that were expressed were of great social significance and recognition of all the participants,” he commented.

Regarding the growth of gymnastics in Paraguay after the Odesur Games, Valenzo highlighted the commitment of the Paraguayan Gymnastics Federation to promote the sport. «The Federation has given great impetus to the development of gymnastics in the country. “They have committed to participating in official events such as ODESUR and South American and Pan American events,” he stated. He also praised Paraguay’s sporting and social commitment, manifested in the broad participation of gymnasts in these events.

Valenzo pointed out that he had the opportunity to meet the Paraguayan coaches and judges, who are preparing for the next cycle, especially the II Junior Pan American Games. At the same time, he highlighted the professionalism of the Federation in administrative and organizational aspects. In 2025, Paraguay will host the Pan American Youth and Adult Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, a challenge that Valenzo considers key to the growth of the sport in the country.

When referring to the National Gymnastics Pavilion, the president of the Pan American Union described the facility as an ideal space for upcoming competitions, highlighting the quality equipment they have thanks to the Odesur Games.

With a packed agenda for 2024 and 2025, Valenzo explained that gymnastics encompasses multiple disciplines, many of which are en route to larger events such as the Multi-Sport Games and World Championships.

Paraguay will host the Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship, qualifying for the Central American and Caribbean Games and the 2025 World Championship, as well as the Junior Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship, which will serve as a test event for the II Junior Pan American Games.

Finally, Valenzo expressed his satisfaction with his first visit to Paraguay. “I got a very positive impression of the country, its people and specifically the work that the Gymnastics Federation is doing,” he commented. Additionally, he expressed his interest in collaborating more closely with Special Olympics, promoting inclusion in gymnastics from the Pan American Union.

Naomi Valenzo’s visit highlights the important role that Paraguay is playing on the international gymnastics stage, with great events on the horizon that will continue to promote the sport in the country.
