New game, new luck and new year, new heads: There will be new faces in some positions in local cultural and media institutions in the coming year. The large tankers like the Art History Museum or the Albertina will not set sail with new management until 2025, but many a maneuverable motorboat in the stormy cultural waters will have a new captain in the coming months.
The Burgtheater is undoubtedly one of the big steamers, where current director Martin Kušej is entering the second half of his last season before the Swiss Stefan Bachmann takes over with his program for the new 2024/25 season. This year’s summer season will also be the last for director Bernd Loebe as director of the Tyrolean Festival Erl, before he hands over to star tenor Jonas Kaufmann. And Elisabeth Sobotka, director of the Bregenz Festival, will come up with another festival edition designed by her in 2024, before she passes the baton to the Finn Lilli Paasikivi, whose influence will then be visible at the lake for the first time in 2025.
The first edition under the new boss is already approaching the Carinthian Summer. Nadja Kayali has taken over from Holger Bleck and is presenting her first program for the music festival. The festival weeks in Vienna will also be designed by Milo Rau for the first time, following Christophe Slagmuylder presented his last edition in 2023 before returning to his home country of Belgium.
And in Salzburg, the new acting director Marina Davydova has already driven in a first, sensational stake with the co-decision on a new “Everyman”, which is to be followed by others. In the future, the all-encompassing look at German-speaking theater events will be cast through the eyes of an Austrian, as Nora Hertlein-Hull will take over the management of the Berlin Theatertreffen on January 1st, which is a stage festival that brings together the year’s central performances in the German capital.
In the museum sector, the major new takeovers are not due until 2025, but it is already certain that in the summer of 2024 the British Michelle Cotton will take over the management of the Kunsthalle Wien from the WHW collective, which has not been renewed. And on February 1st, the current director of the Montafon Museums, Michael Kasper, will take over as head of the Vorarlberg Museum following Andreas Rudigier left for the Tyrolean State Museums. However, it is still unknown who will be at the helm of the renowned Reinhardt Seminar in the future following Maria Happel withdrew in the dispute. Tamara Metelka is leading the institution on an interim basis, for which a new management should be found by the summer semester.
In 2024, the personnel carousel in the media sector will turn somewhat more slowly following numerous prominent decisions this year. It is currently foreseeable that the “Standard” will have a new editor-in-chief, Gerold Riedmann, from April. He replaces Martin Kotynek. Riedmann’s position at the top editorial office of the “Vorarlberger Nachrichten” will once once more be taken over by Isabel Russ, which means that a person from the owning family will have the opportunity to take over. There will also be movement at the second daily newspaper from Vorarlberg, the “Neue Vorarlberger Tageszeitung”, unless the current interim editor-in-chief Jörg Stadler takes over the position permanently.
It is still unclear who will manage the “Wiener Zeitung”, which has been published primarily online for several months, in the future. The application deadline for the position of editor-in-chief ended in mid-December. At ORF, too, it is expected early in the year that the five new department heads for the multimedia specialist departments will be announced. What is already certain, however, is that Rainer Nowak will find a new home as “Presse” editor-in-chief at the “Kronen Zeitung” following his departure caused by chats that became public. He will head a super department for economics and politics there from the beginning of 2024. And an era is coming to an end at the Tyrolean Moser Holding, as long-time CEO Hermann Petz is stepping down from his position on the board at the turn of the year. He will be followed by the previous deputy on January 1st. Chairman of the board Silvia Lieb.
