MEXICO CITY (AP) — Some 2,000 runners of the more than 21,000 who participated in the recent edition of the Mexico City marathon did not complete the entire route, the capital’s Sports Institute reported on Friday.
The organizers of the race thus responded to various local media reports, according to which 11,000 participants had not finished the test, including some who boasted of having done so but allegedly cheated.
“We regret that some media outlets and users on social networks have disclosed unverified information and without having sources of information,” the organizers said in a statement. “The erroneous information spread regarding alleged irregular registrations of participants is strongly denied.”
The Institute reported that 21,504 competitors began the test held on August 27 from the official starting point. Of them, 19,697 completed the entire route.
In the men’s division, the event was won by Bolivian Héctor Garibay and in women by Kenyan Celine Chepchirchir.
Garibay set a new mark of 2 hours 8 minutes and 23 seconds.
In addition to the reports from some media, users on social networks shared images of some runners who boasted regarding not having completed the complete route and still having crossed the finish line, obtaining their medal.
The Institute explained that a total of 28,410 runners registered, but of them only 25,517 collected their kit, which included each runner’s number for the test, which includes a chip to mark their times along the route.
It is uncertain how many runners who picked up their number and did not start from the official start were able to enter the race during any part of the course. The organizers also did not specify the reason why nearly 2,000 runners did not finish the entire course.
The Mexican capital marathon has the Gold Label awarded by World Athletics to the best events in the world. Among the requirements to have this category is to have elite category runners of at least five different nationalities and with specific times for each branch, in addition to delivering a minimum amount of financial prize to the first eight places in the competition.
