Featured projects from Solve For Tomorrow Brazil
Eight years ago, more precisely in 2016 edition, Solve For Tomorrow Brasil awarded a project that aimed to reforest the Atlantic Forest and generate income for the indigenous village Itapuã-Tupi Guarany, in the Ribeira Valley. For this, the team used the implementation of the cultivation of juçara and peach palm hearts by the students’ cooperative.
Three years later, em 2019, Solve For Tomorrow included projects from nine Latin American countries, including Brazil. The Brazilian team, made up of third-year students at the EEMTI Marconi Coelho Reis school, in Cascavel, Ceará, took first place in the award with a prototype that unites sustainability and health. The project gained prominence with a biofilm created from guava leaves (Psidium), which can be used in dressings for burn victims or people with skin lesions.
The Brazilian edition of Solve For Tomorrow em 2021 awarded teams from the states of São Paulo, Ceará, Pernambuco, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. That year, the most prominent prototypes were related to sustainability and health, due to the Covid-19 pandemic period. The team from Escola EEB Bom Pastor, in Chapecó (SC), was among the top rated of the Popular Jury thanks to the prototype created to contribute to the pulmonary recovery of patients with respiratory sequelae from the virus.
That same year, the team from the Professor Sebastião de Oliveira Rocha State School, in São Carlos (SP), ranked 1st among the national winners with a prototype developed for the production of biogas from organic waste, aiming to reduce food waste in a school environment. On the occasion, the team’s guiding teacher, Barbara Guedes Rodrigues, commented on the importance of the program for the educational system in Brazil. “It’s important not just for us, but for other schools and students who need a boost on their academic journeys.”
Finally, in the ninth and most recent Brazilian edition of the program, held em 2022, the topic of sustainability was the most addressed by the projects presented. Among the winners were teams from Ceará, Rondônia, Maranhão, Amazonas, Santa Catarina and Bahia. Students from the Marconi Coelho Reis Secondary School (EEMTI), in Cascavel (CE), were the national winners of the edition with a prototype created to fight arboviruses and the proliferation of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. This same institution has already been on the podium of the program in other editions, with teams guided by the same educator: Heloina Lopes Capistrano. For her, “The award continues to encourage young people from the institution to seek sustainable solutions to real problems in our community”.
Also in the ninth edition, the team of students from the Dom Ungarelli Full Time Teaching Center, in Pinheiro (MA), won in two categories of the program with a prototype of Magnetic Vegetable Garden.
“Over the years, Solve For Tomorrow Brasil has established itself as an initiative responsible for stimulating and giving visibility to the scientific and academic efforts of public school students and teachers in the country. And in addition, the projects presented also promote positive impacts for society, being innovative solutions that contribute to areas such as sustainability, health, education and even urban infrastructure”, says Anna Karina Pinto, Director of Corporate Marketing at Samsung Brazil. “We are very excited to see the projects entered in this 10th edition, which promises to be remarkable for everyone involved”.
“At each edition, we get to know creative, inspiring projects that are connected with the challenges of the present and the future. They are groups of professors and students engaged in new educational experiences and in the search for sustainable solutions”, says Beatriz Cortese, Executive Director of Cenpec, the organization responsible for the general coordination of Solve For Tomorrow in Brazil. “By recognizing these initiatives and offering mentoring to the teams, the program contributes to the promotion of equity and quality in Brazilian public education”.
