Solidarity Wills: Leaving a Legacy for Future Generations on International Day of Wills of Solidarity

2023-09-13 11:24:14

The legacies we leave to future generations have a name, wills of solidarity, and a date on which to celebrate the value of these appreciated gestures, September 13, International Day of Wills of Solidarity.

In a world that often seems to revolve around the individual, a date like today (September 13), inspires us to consider the legacy that we want to leave to our future generations with an action such as the solidarity will, which is still a powerful expression of generosity that allows people to direct all or part of their assets to the projects of nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to address social, medical, educational and environmental challenges.

In the last 5 years, the 22 non-profit organizations that make up www.haztestamentosolidario.orghave received 1,565 solidarity wills, a trend that is increasing thanks to the platform whose job is to inform society of the possibility of leaving a legacy to improve other lives and that of our planet. According to data from the latest annual report prepared by it, In 2022 alone, non-profit organizations received donations from 325 people who, during their lifetime, decided to leave a lasting mark on the world through their wills, worth 40,985,380 million euros, 21% more than in 2021 ( 33.8 million euros).

Being supportive goes beyond the financial donations to which we are accustomed. It involves empathy, compassion, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of others. Numerous studies have shown that practicing solidarity not only benefits those who receive help, but also has positive effects on our own happiness and well-being. Helping others activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure and satisfaction, which makes us feel more connected and fulfilled, bringing us closer to a certain meaning in life.

“This feeling of contributing and feeling a part of solidarity is also linked to the internal well-being that gratitude produces, to its bidirectionality, which not only benefits the one who receives and gives thanks, but also the one who gives and accepts them. “Solidarity makes us feel fair and fulfilled, complete,” explains.Ángel Peralbo, psychologist, teacher and disseminator, for whom a solidarity will means “something like closing the circle, contributing part of oneself, part of what has been obtained”.

“For me it is a peace of mind and a joy to know that, when I am no longer here, thanks to my legacy I will be contributing to preserving the world”; “I feel happy because I am doing an act of generosity, and also, it is a support for research because I know that my family is going to benefit”are some of the statements of people who provide their testimonyhttps://haztestamentosolidario.org/testimonios/ following making a joint will.

For an NGO, receiving the news that they are going to be included in a will is a great satisfaction that reveals the humanity of those people who have a last wish for transcendence. There are many projects and actions to which all of these donations are allocated, also taking into account that a non-profit entity is exempt from transfer taxes. In this way, they dedicate 100% of the amounts received to help those who need it most, to advance in medical research, to accompany older people, to cure, to defend human rights, to educate children, as well as to projects intended to protect our most precious asset, the planet we live on.
