There have been pro-Palestinian gatherings and anti-Semitic graffiti in Berlin for days. On Saturday the police broke up a small demonstration at the Brandenburg Gate. Groups also came together in Neukölln.

The police broke up a demonstration in solidarity with Palestine at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Saturday followingnoon.

According to an rbb reporter, around 50 people had gathered. They waved Palestinian flags and held up posters expressing solidarity. A police spokesman said the people had apparently come to a demonstration that had been postponed by the organizer for a week.

The police were on site with around 150 emergency services and broke up the event with loudspeaker announcements.

Small groups at Hermannplatz

Since the massive attack by the terrorist group Hamas from the Gaza Strip Israel on Saturday last week there were repeated pro-Palestinian gatherings in Berlin. There were several bans on demonstrations due to fears of anti-Semitic statements.

In Neukölln, small groups of around 15 to 20 people gathered at Herrmannplatz on Saturday and some argued with the police, who were there with several police vehicles. According to a dpa reporter, there were initially no major conflicts there.

Just on Friday, around 150 people gathered on Neukölln’s Sonnenallee despite a ban on demonstrations, some of whom were carrying Palestinian flags or symbols. The police broke up the meeting. According to the information, 24 people were temporarily taken into custody. There were criminal charges for breach of the peace, physical assault, resistance to law enforcement officers, disturbing the public peace and other offenses.

Stars of David smeared on residential buildings

In addition, the police reported a number of graffiti with a political connection to the Middle East conflict from the past few days. In Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, a total of three painted Stars of David were found on two residential buildings and on a toilet block, as the police reported. According to the police, an Israeli flag that was hoisted on the forecourt of the Reinickendorf town hall was damaged.

In Lichtenberg, a pro-Israel sign was found at the Frankfurter Allee subway station. A banner “with reference to Palestine” hung on the bridge of the Tempelhof S-Bahn station. This was removed, as were anti-Israel posters on houses on Sonnenallee. Anti-Israel posters were discovered at the East Side Gallery in Friedrichshain, and anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered on the Senate Building Administration building in Wilmersdorf. They too were removed.

The State Police at the State Criminal Police Office has started an investigation.
