The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Albacete will host this Friday, May 20, a Charity Paella. The event is organized by Students of Medicine in Action (EMA), through a group of volunteers of second-year Medicine students.
The purpose of the activity is to help refugees who are in Athens (Greece). More than 40,000 refugees live in flats and camps there. They are families of very diverse origins (Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, African countries…), with many children, without work and highly dependent on subsidies. They say that, in the last year, the Greek government has suspended aid to many of them because they are considered illegal immigrants who must leave the country, but the European borders are closed and Turkey does not accept them. To make their situation worse, the eviction of the 8,000 who are in houses in Athens that will be allocated to refugees from Ukraine has begun.
Various international NGOs and Greek associations are trying to deal with this humanitarian crisis. Added to them is the EMA group from the Faculty of Medicine of Albacete, which collaborates with the NGO Acción Directa to deliver food and clothing to the thousands of vulnerable refugees in Athens.
On-the-ground delivery
The proceeds from the Solidarity Paella will be used for this. In addition, the medical students themselves will contribute to distributing the aid in Athens this summer.
The event also has a Row Zero in case someone cannot attend the appointment but wants to participate. Row Zero rations will go to vulnerable people in Albacete. They can be paid at the Hall and Concierge of the Faculty of Medicine itself.
