One of the remarkable women involved in this initiative has, in just a few short weeks, created over 50 solidarity cushions, each weighing about 170 grams. “This project not only keeps us active but also allows us to engage with the community around us, fostering a spirit of collaboration and support,” she explained after presenting one of the heart-shaped cushions to an ACCM representative. Her dedication exemplifies the strength and unity that the initiative inspires among its participants.
The Day Center has proudly joined the Bizi Bihotzak initiative, which aims to produce and donate heart-shaped solidarity cushions specifically designed for individuals who have undergone mastectomies. The unique shape of these cushions is highly intentional; by placing them under the arm near the surgical area, recipients can alleviate discomfort resulting from surgery, minimizing friction and potential injuries. “We are thrilled to see this initiative blossom, offering our community members the chance to contribute through donations of soft, sanitized fabrics or by participating in workshops to help craft these cushions,” stated Maitena Urbaneta, the councilor for Social Affairs.
The Senior Center, embracing its mission within the labor therapy program, has wholeheartedly committed to creating as many cushions as possible, which will then be donated to the Municipality’s Breast Cancer Association. The inspiration for the Heart Pillow project dates back to 2001 in the United States when a nurse, also an oncology patient, found relief through a cushion fashioned in this unique shape. Its success has sparked a movement, extending to hospitals across Europe, and now, in conjunction with ACCM and the Muskiz Day Center, it has made its way to Meatzaldea.
