Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the “Gschwandt for People” initiative has been helping refugees from the war-torn country. Thanks to the helpers, 35 people from Ukraine lived in the community until recently. Currently there are only 18, because some families build up a livelihood in other places. Nevertheless, the initiative is constantly looking for accommodation.
Gschwandtner Abies Austria Holzverarbeitung GmbH is now making an empty house available to them. It stands on land that the company purchased. Managing director Andreas Maxwald approached “Gschwandt for people” with the offer.
However, the house had to be renovated from the ground up, and many Gschwandtners have lent a hand over the past few weeks. The rural youth, for example, got the entire garden area in good shape.
Seven people (a mother with four children and the grandparents) have now been able to move in. The mother and her eldest daughter work in a catering business, the other three children attend schools in Gschwandt and Gmunden.
